Wunschgarten DIY Workshop 01

Skateboard - Birdhouse

It turned out during the painting and drawing workshops with kids aged between 7 and 13, that creative activities tend to become gendered just around these ages. As soon as kids grow into their teens, drawing workshops become less attended by boys. To hack this socially constructed gender split in the creative fields, DIY workshops are organized alongside the other creative activities of Wunschgarten. The fewer boys come, the more freedom the others have to learn how to construct and build with wood and a screwing machine. An important part of these workshops is to share a sustainable attitude toward building and constructing as well. Birdhouses built from broken skateboards and stools upcycled from the wooden boards of a caravan fence communicate the same message: the first step toward sustainability is to check which materials are already available for use.

Wunschgarten DIY Workshop 02
Bunting Flags

Since adults, too, often don’t have the freedom to co-design their surroundings, it makes sense to learn together how to shape shared spaces without making permanent changes. Especially during parties in common spaces, bunting flags have become a beloved way to transform an atmosphere—temporary, non-invasive, yet full of presence. To explore the hidden possibilities of bunting flags, Wunschgarten offers workshops where children and teenagers design banners together. Whether through upcycling or spray painting, participants discover that even banners can be more than glittering, throwaway birthday decorations—they can be a respectful tool for claiming space and celebrating sustainable creativity together.
